Debra Diane Rice

Debra Diane Rice (69) of Leicester passed away peacefully on March 14, 2025, at Vanderbilt Hospital, surrounded by her loved ones. A woman of boundless compassion, steadfast faith, and a heart that embraced everyone, Debbie was a light in the lives of all who knew her. Her devotion to family and friends was evident in every moment she shared, leaving behind a lifetime of cherished memories.

She was the beloved wife of Basil Rice, with whom she shared nearly two decades of love, laughter, and companionship. Their journey together was filled with many great experiences—spending time with family, watching football, spending days on the lake, and unwinding on their deck beneath the Carolina sky.

Debbie’s greatest joy was her son, Aaron Higgins, whom she adored beyond measure. She embraced his wife, Jenny, and their children with endless love, becoming the beloved "Gam Gams" who created cherished memories with her grandchildren.

Her love for family knew no bounds. Debbie cherished her siblings, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, and in-laws, each of whom held a special place in her heart. From shopping trips to beach vacations, lake weekends to holiday gatherings, she was the heart of every celebration. Her warmth, kindness, and unwavering presence made every occasion more meaningful. A constant source of support and encouragement, she had a remarkable way of being there just when she was needed most.

Debbie is survived by her husband, Basil; her son, Aaron (Jenny); her adored grandchildren, Katie, Stone, Jacob, and Carter; her brother, James Higgins (Linda); and her sisters, Betty Ray (C.L.), and Beulah Wilson. She also leaves behind many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws who will forever hold her close in their hearts.

She now joins her beloved parents, Collis and Onie Higgins, her sister, Margaret Kuykendall, and many treasured loved ones who have gone before her. Welcomed with open arms, she is at peace in their embrace.

A Celebration of Life will be held on May 3rd, 2025 at Cedar Hill Free Will Baptist Church 227 Johnston School Blvd. Asheville, NC, at 2:00 where family and friends will gather to honor her beautiful spirit.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made at the celebration of life in Asheville, NC, to support medical expenses and end of life care. The family appreciates all contributions in remembrance of the incredible life she lived.
