James Michael McKinstry, ADC (AW/NAC) U.S. Navy Retired, age 68 of Indian Mound, TN passed away peacefully on April 19, 2018 in Nashville, TN, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born April 2, 1950 in Saint Louis, MO.James was a member of the Clarksville High School graduating class of 1968. A Vietnam War Veteran, he joined the U.S. Navy in 1969 and proudly served until his retirement in 1990. His most cherished memories from his days of service were his times with VRC-50 and serving on the crew of the U.S.S. Midway, serving on the Aircrew for the C-2. After retirement, he worked as a military contractor for nearly 30 years. He was a long-time member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, and a lifetime member of the VFW and the VRC-50 Association. A former Boy Scout, he also served his community as a Scout Leader for Troop 525 in Clarksville.James was preceded in death by his parents, John McKinstry, CWO3 and Helen Ball McKinstry; and sister, Mary Berrigan.James is survived by his loving wife, Melissa McKinstry; sons, James McKinstry II, Scott Murphy, and Steven (Amy) Murphy; daughter, Helen (Patty) McKinstry; brother, William (Patty) Leighty; the joys of his life, his grandchildren, Gunner Murphy and Hayden Murphy; niece, Mary "KC" (Terry) Lang, and many other family members and friends.A memorial service will be held at a later date and arrangements will be announced when they become available.
