James Howell Sandlin passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, September 19, 2018. He was born December 5,1940 in Massey, Alabama.James was a graduate of Athens College and Vanderbilt University. He worked in the administration of Vanderbilt University for more than 30 years, and has been creating a home place, cultivating his farm, and building a herd of Santa Gertrudis cattle for the last 44 years.James is survived by his beloved wife, Susan and his four children – Laura Hundley Moore, Mary Elizabeth Sandlin, James Andrew Sandlin, and Kathryn Sandlin Morel. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, one great-grandchild, his brother, Charles Sandlin, and his niece, Selena Lindsey.He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Louise Sandlin, as well as his brother, Larry Sandlin.A memorial service will be held at West End United Methodist Church in Nashville on Saturday, September 22, 2018. Visitation will be at 9:30 am, followed by an 11:00 am service.The family wishes to express gratitude to Dr. Richard Hock, Dr. David Hansen, Dr. Kristen Scarpato, and Dr. Kathryn Beckermann of Vanderbilt Medical Center, as well as Sarah Browning and Joel Reynolds of Alive Hospice.In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to the West End United Methodist Church Preschool, 2200 West End Avenue, Nashville, TN 37203 or to the Vanderbilt University Scholarship Fund, Nashville, TN.
