Janie Merle Giles Salyards passed away November 21, 2018. She was born October 29, 1932 in Kosciusko, MS to the late Fred D. and Sally Thornton Giles.She was married in 1957 to W.E. Salyards III (deceased 1995). She leaves three daughters: Jane Chere' (Gregg) Mikos, Renee Thompson, and Michele Metzger; six grandchildren: Jessica (Daniel) Anderson, Kayla Smith, Tyler Thompson, Stephanie Mikos, Daniel Mikos, and Grace Metzger; six great-grandchildren: Colton Anderson, Alyssa Anderson, Brooke Anderson, Jayden Smith, Cambry Kelley, and Kelsea Adkins. She also leaves a host of cousins and friends.After graduating from Mississippi State in 1954, she moved to Memphis, where she worked many years as a microbiologist for the West Tennessee Chest Disease Hospital and the Memphis City Lab. In 1977, she was transferred to Chattanooga as the Director of the branch laboratory there. When that facility closed in 1980, she moved to Nashville where she served as training coordinator and as part of that job was an adjunct Professor at APSU. After retiring in 1988 from the state of Tennessee, she worked at DCI Laboratory until 1997. After that she spent her summers with her grandchildren. Other times, she sold insurance and worked for H & R Block.She was a former member of the Society of Industrial Microbiologists, the American Society of Microbiology, the Tennessee Society of Micro-Biology, and various other local groups. In 1974 she became a member of the American Business Women's Association where she served as an officer.
She enjoyed playing the piano and organ. She was an avid bridge player belonging to several groups. She also enjoyed camping and fishing - mainly trout and deep sea. She was a Baptist and was a member of the Bellevue Baptist Church where she was in Sunday School and sang in the choir.Funeral services will be conducted at 2 P.M., Monday, November 26, 2018 at Bellevue Baptist Church, 7400 Hwy 70S, Nashville, TN 37221. Burial will follow at 3:30 P.M. in Harpeth Hills Memory Gardens, 9090 Highway 100, Nashville, TN 37221. The family will receive friends at Bellevue Baptist Church from 10 A.M. until the time of service on Monday.
